My biased take on Robin Hood (2018): the themes that played out

Below is a list of themes that I spotted while watching the movie, along with my interpretation and additional thoughts.

The system that governs you can also betray you no matter how loyal you have been to it

We see this in how the main character Robin faithfully went to serve his nation and faith in the Crusade, but return to find out that he was falsely claimed as dead and his manor seized by the sheriff. Yes, Robin did ‘betray’ his side of the war by trying to intervene in the execution of Yahya’s son, but this was not the reason for the betrayal by the Sheriff. The lesson here is that you must remain vigilant. In the case of Robin, this was straightforward as the betrayal was straightforward. For Marian, we really have to tip our hats off to her, as she was able to take up the initiative to rebel against the Sheriff despite the betrayal being less obvious, albeit quietly.

The system is only as good as the people who man it

The system of the day, in this case, the ‘government’ of Nottingham, led by the Sheriff, is meant to benefit the people of Nottingham. Otherwise, why would people adhere to the system? We abide by rules and regulations because we believe it to be to our…
